Le projet de recherche-formation-action Topozym sur le développement durable de l’espace public a été mené par l’Unité de Géographie Economique et Sociale de l’Université de Liège (UGES), l’Instituut voor Sociale en Economische Geografie de la Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (ISEG) et l’Institut d’Eco-pédagogie (IEP) entre janvier 2007 et janvier 2009.
Topozym veut contribuer à l’évolution des conceptions et des pratiques dans la gestion et l’usage des lieux et des espaces publics dans la perspective d’un développement durable. Le but de la recherche était de produire un tableau de bord au service des personnes qui sont des vecteurs de changement de comportements des acteurs de l’espace (animateurs territoriaux, secteur éducatif, agents de développement local,...), pour les aider à concevoir et/ou à évaluer des démarches participatives efficientes et cohérentes dans le cadre de la gouvernance territoriale des lieux et des espaces publics.
L’accent mis sur les changements de comportement répond à l’urgence de définir aujourd’hui de nouvelles façons d’accompagner les personnes sur le chemin d’une conscience de nos responsabilités à l’échelle locale mais aussi planétaire, qui devrait se traduire à terme par des manières de gérer et d’utiliser les lieux et les espaces publics de manière parcimonieuse, respectueuse et soucieuse de l’avenir.
L’originalité du projet est liée à une méthodologie intégrée de recherche et de formation-action qui implique des acteurs de terrain dont un certain nombre seront de facto des utilisateurs potentiels des résultats de la recherche.

Het project van actie-vorming-onderzoek Topozym over duurzame ontwikkeling van publieke plaatsen werd gevoerd door de Unité de Géographie Economique et Sociale van de Université de Liège (UGES), het Instituut voor Sociale en Economische Geografie van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (ISEG) en het Institut d’Eco-pédagogie (IEP) tussen januari 2007 en januari 2009.
Topozym wil bijdragen tot de evolutie van inzichten in en praktijken van beheer en gebruik van publieke plaatsen en ruimten met het oog op duurzame ontwikkeling. Het doel van het onderzoek is het ontwikkelen van een beleidsinstrument (dashboard) ten dienste van personen die vectoren zijn voor gedragsveranderingen van gebruikers van de ruimte (territoriale werkers, onderwijssector, agenten van lokale ontwikkeling...). Topozym wil deze personen helpen bij het ontwerpen en/of evalueren van efficiënte en coherente, participatieve methoden en technieken voor territoriale ‘governance’ van publieke plaatsen en ruimten.
Dat het accent geplaatst wordt op gedragsveranderingen beantwoordt aan de huidige vraag naar nieuwe manieren om personen te begeleiden op weg naar een duidelijk bewustzijn van onze verantwoordelijkheden op lokaal en mondiaal vlak. Dit bewustzijn zou zich op termijn moeten vertalen in manieren om publieke plaatsen en ruimten op een respectvolle en bedachtzame wijze te beheren en te gebruiken.
De originaliteit van het project ligt in de geïntegreerde methodologie van onderzoek en vormingactie, die inhoudt dat een bepaald aantal actoren van het terrein die betrokken worden bij het project de facto potentiële gebruikers van de resultaten van het onderzoek zijn.

The project of action-training-research Topozym on sustainable development of public places was conducted by the Unité de Géographie Economique et Sociale of Liège University (UGES), the Institute voor Social en Economic Geography of the Catholique University of Leuven (ISEG) and the Institut d’Eco-pédagogie (IEP) between January 2007 and January 2009.
Topozym wants to contribute to the evolution of concepts and practices in the management and use of public places and spaces, in the perspective of sustainable development. The research goal is to produce a dashboard for use by people who can change the behaviour of stakeholders (community territorial animators, educational sector, local developments agents...), to help them design and/or evaluate efficient and coherent participative processes for territorial governance of public places and spaces.
The emphasis placed on behavioural changes is a response to today’s urgent need to define new ways of helping people become more aware of our responsibilities at the local and global level. This should eventually lead to ways of managing and using public places and spaces in a more careful manner, one that is more respectful and shows great concern for the future.
The originality of the project is linked to an integrated methodology of research and trainingaction, which implies the involvement of a certain number of actors that will de facto be potential users of the research results.
